Sew for the Body You Have

Oh how I want to do this—sew for the body I have instead of wait til I lose the weight I gained back. I can't explain why I haven't been able to do this, although I've seen lots of reasons that this can be so difficult.

Has your sewing stalled because of your shape or size or weight or because gravity and/or aging are taking a toll?

Have you overcome this? Are you making any progress with these issues?

Please help me and anyone else who might read this.

  1. My weight fluctuates a lot. I always sew my clothes for the body that I have now. Because we need to live for now, not for maybe some day way off when. This is the size and age and weight that I am, and so this is what I sew for. If I lose weight, I'll sew smaller things then. If I gain it, I'll sew larger things then. And in the meantime, I always have some clothes for myself that fit me and that I like! You can do it!

  2. Oh yes! I have to force myself to cut into gorgeous fabric as I am always telling myself - I'll lose weight and therefore it will look better on me - and then I have to tell myself it is wasted sitting in the stash waiting for me.

  3. Hi Sandra. I've finally decided that whatever my weight and size and body structure, this is me. I have to own it and embrace it to be comfortable with myself. It really HELPS to have beautiful fabrics and clothes that fit. It is a continuous battle for me with fit, but I am winning.
    If you can sew for the body you have, you feel better about yourself because you look lovely, and then it's easier to take yourself in hand and do what you need to do for your health. Just my opinion, but it's working for me right now.

  4. I agree with thornberry. Sew for now - don't stress about weight and age. That just destroys the moment. And does nothing for self esteem, and then it is not so easy to look after yourself, and the downward sewing spiral continues.

  5. I agree with all the posters above. Sew for the shape you are sporting right now. I spent the late afternoon adding tissue to bodice and midriff pattern pieces because SOMEHOW my waist is no longer a 26. I rather have the dress fit me NOW, than pretend that I will lose the inches that age has added.

  6. Well, this is a serious issue. I struggled with the anxiety of weight all of my life. In my late 30's I became more at peace with the changes and it made my life better. This is me until things change. It feels nice to wear new clothes that are created for specifically for me just because I love me.

  7. You are precious and beautiful just as you are, sew clothes that fit and flatter the real body you have now, wear them, enjoy them, be full of life and happy! And then if your weight goes up or down, sew some different ones and enjoy those. Your value as a person is not based on your weight, rather the inner essence of yourself, your personality, the relationships with friends and family.
