An Easy Little Sundress But I Need to Cover My Shoulders

Okay, now for something easy-peasy. Inspired by Rhonda's Creative Life, I want to make a sundress. Goodness, the bodice is already shirred. All it needs is a seam down the back... Wait, I need to cover my shoulders.

I'll do what Rhonda did and shorten it in a way that I can retain the bottom border. I'm going to make mine somewhere around knee length, so there will be plenty of fabric to work with. I have something like this in mind. (If you have any Photoshop skills, please don't shoot me; this is just an awful combination of a couple of screen captures, I know.)

The fabric is rayon, machine wash, tumble dry and on sale (as of today) at Joann's. (The link takes to you a different print.) I bought mine at the Joann's near my house.

So I need to make the shoulder "straps" wide enough so that the fabric falls so gently around my shoulders. Rhonda mentioned stretching the bodice when stitching the shoulder straps to achieve gathers. So far, so good. But her straps, which are perfect for her and really very cute, don't cover enough of me for me.

Any ideas? Suggestions? Is this something you've tried? How did it go? I really want to keep this easy. You know how slowly I sew, and I'd like to wear it this season. :)

Does blogger or blogpost or whatever this is have any emoticons? Where are they? I need them! And thank you for any/all ideas.

Blessings and peace...

  1. Sandra~ do you have enough of the gathered part to make some wide shoulder pieces? You could bind the edges with bias, or just serge and turn under, using the width you want across the shoulder and then tapering in (or not) as you reach the top of the dress. Looks lovely.
BTW, you were one of the ones who pushed me over the top on SF designs also!

    1. Hi Lynda, Thanks for visiting my little blog and (of course) especially for leaving a comment! I won't have enough of the pre-shirred part, but will definitely have enough of the print that is in the skirt portion (above the lower border). That gives me an idea, though. Maybe I could make several rows of gathers (without elastic), then attach it. I'm just not sure whether rectangles would work or if I should be angling those edges...
Oh and welcome to the world of Sure-Fit Designs. Did you write somewhere that you're taking the classes with Glenda? If yes, I think you will be very pleased with that experience.

    2. Hi. Sorry it took so long to get back. Crazy week here. I think you can take some muslin or scraps and play with shapes to see what will work best for you.
Thanks for the welcome. Yes, I am going to the retreat in Oregon in October. Spoke with my friend, and we'll go together for the six days. Can't wait.

  2. Sorry, no suggestions from this side of the globe, but I am looking forward to see what you come up with. Though, have you thought about giving Rhonda an email and asking her? She is just the best when it comes to finding great wearable solutions ...J

    1. Hi Judith, I'm getting there, slowly as usual for me. I did leave my question in the Comments of Rhonda's blog post about how she made her sundress, but she has several newer posts, so maybe she didn't see it. If my current idea doesn't work, I think I'll see if I can send her an email. Thanks for your good idea!

In the "Comment as" drop-down box, you can choose Name/URL and then enter your name (first name is enough) and you don't have to include a URL. I have disabled comments from Anonymous because of too much sp@m. Please let me know if you have any questions about this; thanks. You know I want to make it as easy as possible to hear from you!
